Preparing the Modern Hockey Surface

There is a major change to how the modern competition surface in hockey is marked—management points for the corner and penalty corner are marked with descenders leading away from the competition surface. The old style of marking hockey surfaces was to have these indicators marked within the field of play.

Two other reasons to remark your hockey surface are mistakes that are common to many competition sites within the USA.

NOTE: A document detailing these changes (see image to left) and addressing other common faults is available as a PDF and can be downloaded by clicking here.

The first of the common faults mentioned above is that the proximity markings set out around the circle (5 yards for high schools and 5 meters for colleges) have been laid down with what we describe as an overzealous application. It is not correct to make so many markings that these proximity indicators take on the look of a second circle. In fact, these markings are to be sparce—two-inches (2") wide, about 12" long, and a maximum of 14 to 15 marks in total.

The second is that many college sites have their penalty corner marks measured at 5 and 10 yards when they should be at 5 and 10 meters to be in compliance with NCAA specifications.

If you are about to remark your hockey team's competition surface for the fall season, please consider making these improvements!
