Training & Development
The Starter Umpire course, designed by the International Hockey Federation, is a three hour introduction to the world of field hockey officiating.
The course instructor is Cris Maloney, Publisher of UmpireHockey.com, nationally certified Umpire Coach, president of the Central Jersey Field Hockey Umpire Association, silver medalist at 1982 USOC National Sports Festival, coach of gold medal teams at the 1985 and 1987 USOC Olympic Festivals, and founder of the Garden State Games Field Hockey Event.
In presenting the course material, Mr. Maloney uses DVDs, photographs, and stories from his 30 years of field hockey experience to bring officiating alive for his students.
The course is successfully completed by taking a 25 question exam and achieving a minimum of 80%. Supervised umpire practice is available for course participants at field hockey camps and various "showcase" tournaments.
Certification as a Starter Umpires requires completion of the "Hockey Ladder II", a 136-yard mobility test of speed and agility, and an evaluation of on-field officiating skills.
According to USA Field Hockey, "The Starter Umpire can successfully officiate competitions that are at least equivalent to the level of play typically demonstrated by competitive U16 club and/or sub-varsity interscholastic field hockey teams."
The course is being held at Kresson School, 1 School Lane, Voorhees, NJ 08043, on Thursday, June 7, 5:30-9:30pm (the first half hour is used to conduct mobility testing, the last half hour is for the written exam).
Cost? $20.00 for USA Field Hockey members, $50 for non-members.
