  • Does learning a new skill and getting paid more than $50 an hour to exercise at local high schools THIS fall appeal to you?

  • Are you an educator in need of a Continuing Education Unit?

  • Are you a parent or player and every time you hear the whistle blow you ask, "What was that?"

  • If you coach hockey, would you and your team benefit from understanding the game from an umpire's perspective?

  • Are you a field hockey umpire who wants to upgrade your skills by taking a refresher course?
If the answer to any of those questions is, "Yes," then you'll want to see which of the following courses is right for you.

Courses and Locations

CENTRAL NEW JERSEY: This course is offered by Mercer County Community College (West Windsor, NJ, USA). Participants who are teachers can earn a full Continuing Education Unit.

Mr. Maloney has been officiating field hockey since 1977. He was a silver medalist at the 1982 United States Olympic Committee’s National Sports Festival and assistant coach for the gold medal winners in the 1985 and 1987 events. Mr. Maloney is the founder of the Garden State Games Field Hockey Event (1983) and was a presenter at the International Olympic Committee's 1985 Olympic Solidarity Course for field hockey. He has served as a regional director and coach in the United States Field Hockey Association’s Futures program. His knowledge of the game from all these perspectives help his students succeed as umpires.
Instructor: Cristopher Maloney.

General Information: This field hockey rules course is for future umpires, experienced umpires, athletes, coaches, parents, and educators (open to people as young as 15 years of age).

Who Takes This Course? Last year six full-time college students took the course. In one month (mid-September to mid-October) two had earned over $1,000 officiating this great sport. A retired gentleman took the course and earned over $1,800---he had no field hockey experience before taking the course. Two of the course's graduates earned their varsity rating in their first year of umpiring! People from as far away as South Plainfield, Wall Township, Marlton, East Brunswick and Philadelphia have made the drive to MCCC to take the course.

Why Is This Course So Popular? Rather than a test-prep approach, Maloney empasizes an understanding of HOW to umpire the game while teaching the rules and intepretations. Maloney enhances his lectures with custom videos that make learning how to umpire field hockey come alive in the classroom.

Course Details: The classroom portion of the course includes 10 hours of instruction and will be held from 6:00 to 8:30PM, July 18th, 21st, 25th, and 28th at the West Windsor campus of Mercer County Community College.

Course participants interested in earning their first badge can practice officiating at evening games played by teenage athletes at area overnight camps. A rating event is held at Rider University on August 11th and the national exam is taken on August 31st at Mercer County Community College.

Tuition: $44.00 payable to Mercer County Community College.

Additional Fees: A $15.00 textbook and $7.00 national rulebook are additional required material. The textbook and rulebook will be available from the instructor at the start of the course. The instructor makes available standard issue umpire equipment for class participants who want to go on and earn their umpire badge. A "starter kit" for $50 includes a T-shirt (for training), approved whistles (4), official stick ring, UmpireHockey.com "GameKeeper" cards (enough for 10 outings/double headers), top quality field hockey penalty cards, and access to instructor led on-field coaching at nearby field hockey camps.

Registration: Call the Mercer County Community College registration office at 609-586-9446. The course number is XCP700.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: No field hockey or umpiring experience necessary. Course participants who want to become a credentialed umpire must pass a written exam and a performance evaluation(s) given by a local umpiring organization. Umpires must join a local field hockey umpiring association and should join their national association (USA Field Hockey). Umpires will have to purchase appropriate clothing to wear while officiating. For high school and college level games this typically means black pants/kilt, primarily black footwear, a black visor/cap, and a few shirts of different colors (teal, orange, yellow, etc.) to match your officating partner while being different from the competitors. Typically, including course fees, a new umpire pays about $200 to get started---all of which is tax deductable on Schedule C of the federal income tax return (check with your accountant).
