The rules governing the game of hockey in 2009 and the 2009 briefing for outdoor umpire managers have been published by the International Hockey Federation (FIH). The rules take effect on May 1, 2009, for international competitions though national governing bodies are empowered to begin using the new rules before that date. Within the USA, the new rules were put into effect on March 13, 2009.
