The first edition of How To Umpire Hockey, by Cristopher Maloney, publisher of UmpireHockey.com, was first published in 2001 and is updated each year.

Though the rules of hockey are certainly discussed in How To Umpire Hockey, the book is more like a conversation about officiating with a seasoned mentor than it is about the rules governing the sport.

When asked why he wrote his book Maloney responded, "I wrote the book to advance the game---to help new and experienced umpires alike understand what’s important and what’s not."

"Some umpires 'over engineer' relatively minor issues," says Maloney. "I mean, do we really need to carry around an electron microscope to be certain the ball isn’t rolling before a free hit is taken?"

Maloney emphasized that, "It does NOT matter if the ball is still moving a little if it means that the team, which was just fouled, can get their possession going faster. Again, they were just fouled...we WANT to penalize the team that committed the foul, not the team that is just trying to get going!"

"An umpire who is too picky about that sort of thing proves that he or she knows the rule AND that he or she doesn’t understand the game," says Maloney. "That's the umpire who would benefit most from this book!"
