USA Field Hockey has released the 2008 version of its annual comparison table of the Rules of Hockey and the modifications that are used within the USA to govern NFHS (National Federation of State High School Associations) and NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association) competitions. Originally released on April 2, 2008, the change in this update notes the appointment of Steve Horgan as the interpreter for the NCAA modifications to the Rules of Hockey.
The comparison table has been made more useful by highlighting in yellow points of emphasis and/or significant changes from last year.
A copy of the comparison table, available as a PDF, can be downloaded by clicking here.
Among the changes governing NFHS play is a modification requiring the attacking team to "retreat" to the promiximity markers prior to restarting after a foul by the defense within five yards of the circle (that is, for those fouls that don't warrant a penalty corner). Another change is the elimination of the NFHS's modification to the coin toss options.
The changes for NCAA play are primarily in the management and disposition of warning cards. When a player earns a yellow card, the umpire must at the time of the card instruct table personnel the amount of time the player is suspended. Their modifications also instruct umpires that the head coach shall be the recipient of a red card earned due to bench decorum.
