Background and Purpose
The Captain of the Year award was created in 2005 by UmpireHockey.com publisher Cristopher Maloney to recognize high school field hockey captains, one per county, who demonstrate an excellent understanding of the rules while acting as her team's advocate during play.

An additional reason for the award is to encourage a culture in officiating within the USA, where umpires welcome interactions from players, including appropriate challenges from captains regarding important calls.

The belief is that games will be better, and hockey will be advanced, if umpires form collaborative relationships with team captains.

Measuring Success
The success of the award is highlighted by this quote from the award’s first winner:

"I was delighted to receive the Henderson Sotheby's International Realty 2005 Captain of the Year award," said Catherine Marchetta, team captain for Princeton High School, Mercer County, New Jersey, USA. She continued, "The open and respectful relationship established between captains and officials at playday, prior to the regular season, definitely set the standard for the rest of the year. This cooperation led to many successful and energized field hockey games in which communication was welcomed by both parties. I hope that this teamwork continues in the future so that everyone enjoys the game of field hockey as much as I did this year!"

Nominations
Only captains who demonstrate the courage and poise to appropriately (with good sportsmanship and in a courteous demeanor) challenge an important call are candidates for the award.

The nomination form must clearly state the disputed call, for example, “The nominee disputed the award of a penalty stroke.” The reason for the dispute, “The nominee said that a penalty stroke should not be awarded for a foot foul inside the circle.” The demeanor of the nominee, “The nominee was upset about the call but spoke to the umpire with a gracious demeanor.” What the nominee said, “The nominee asked the umpire how a foot foul in the circle could be a stroke and asked the umpire to check with the support umpire.” Describe the result of the dispute, “The umpires conferred and explained that the nominee's teammate had kicked the ball away from an attacker and that the umpire judged the kick to be intentional.”

Funding
The award is funded by leasing the naming rights to the Captain of the Year award on a county-by-county basis within each state. The naming rights are acquired for a multi-year period. Potential sponsors include but are not limited to pharmaceutical, biotech, banks, sporting goods stores, and real estate agencies. Only tobacco, alcohol and gambling business are not eligible for award sponsorship.
