Join USA Field Hockey on August 4 at 7:00 PM (ET) for the first ever nationally webcasted Rules Briefing. Viewing is opening to everyone. No memberships required. For the first time in our sport's history, everyone (high school and college players; high school, college and club coaches; youth, high school, and college umpires; fans and members of the media) can hear the same information at the same time. A live Question and Answer period will be available at the end of the webcast with everyone benefiting from each other's questions and going into the season having heard the exact same answers.
This is an unprecedented opportunity for every hockey community in the country to finally get on the same page without any regional localization or "level of play" misunderstandings that have contributed to unnecessary inconsistencies in how hockey is governed from area to area, level to level, and even one game to the next. The Rules Briefing will cover what is expected from players, umpires, and coaches; rule changes, common misunderstandings, and your questions.

You can submit questions, in advance of the webcast, using the Ask The Umpire feature in the RULES section of USAFieldHockey.com and during the webcast (contact information will be displayed as part of the production).

What's in it for the Viewer?
Travel restrictions have been eliminated, getting a room large enough to hold 2,000 people (and a parking lot to hold all their cars) is not an issue, even answering everyone's question is not a problem. The "technology" employed to attend past briefings was pretty simple. Take a car ride, find the right room, pay $20 to $25, listen, ask questions -- simple. The webcast of the National Rules Briefing will use different technology and purchasing a seat at the briefing does not work the way you’ve made purchases on Amazon or other websites. To join the webcast you register first, then you go back, sign in and selected the 2010 Rules Briefing (it will be on the right), buy a $10 “game credit” or token. Why One Room Matters?
Umpires, coaches, and players have all experienced what happens when the season is rolling along and suddenly, as if out of nowhere, a call is made (or not made) on an aerial, a rough tackle, a penalty corner or even with a carding that is clearly in opposition to something that was discussed at one of the regional briefings. Concerns like these can often be traced to a single misunderstanding, miscommunication, or something forgotten from one of the regional briefings -- and sometimes, because a briefing wasn't attended. Now, for the first time ever, every umpire, every coach and every player can be in ONE interconnected room at the same time. Everyone will hear the briefing at the exact same time, if anyone is concerned that they missed something, the briefing can be played over and over again as the first game approaches and once the season is in full swing. There is no additional charge for additional viewings.
What's in it for Hockey in the USA?
This is a tremendous opportunity for everyone and particularly umpires. One of the beauties of the National Rules Briefing is that you can submit your questions in advance AND during the briefing. Although we won't be able to answer all your questions during the briefing, we will answer EVERY question that's submitted on USAFieldHockey.com/asktheumpire.
NOTE: Questions submitted in advance of the briefing that are selected to be answered during the webcast will be entered into a drawing for USA Field Hockey apparel. To qualify, of course, the question must to be submitted by someone attending the webcast. You'll also be able to ask questions during the briefing.
