In conjunction with a Women’s National Team Summer Residency Camp and the USA/Canada Field Hockey Challenge there will be an opportunity for the educational development of Umpires through a Summer Umpiring Academy, July 27-August 1. This Academy will be under the guidance of FIH Grade 1 Umpire Steve Simpson and will take place from July 23-26 and August 2-5 at the USFHA's National Training Center in Virginia Beach, VA. The Summer Umpiring Academy will provide opportunities for interested umpires to practice the skills of their trade in both training and match situations.

The residential training camp will comprise of daily conceptual training sessions concentrating on areas that are deemed to be essential to success on the international stage. In order to create the elite level training environment required, each training session will be umpired under the current FIH international competition guidelines and interpretations.

Additionally each evening throughout the camp, the Women’s Residency Team and Summer Residency athletes will compete in a full International game situation. This match simulation is designed to give International field hockey exposure and experience to both umpires and athletes.

At this camp all attending umpires will be educated in the ways and means of successful umpiring in the International game. Ideally these practices and principles can then be transferred through into our domestic game, ultimately educating our future competitors in the nuances of how the game is controlled and governed at the highest level – leading to improved knowledge and performance in the International game.

This combining of athletic and umpiring resources will provide an appropriate learning environment for the promotion of all facets of elite level field hockey performance within the United States.

Unfortunately all financial burdens for the Academy are at the individual’s own expense (transport, room and board), however there is no charge for the Academy itself.

For further information, to register for the Umpiring Academy or the other Umpiring training opportunities, please contact Roque Viergas (USFHA International Umpires coordinator) via email at viegasr@georgetown.edu or by telephone at 202-687-1930.
