Training & Development
Are you considering officiating field hockey because you love the game or because you're looking for a great part-time job -- or both? Regardless of your personal motivation, if you want to be a field hockey umpire you've come to the right place!
Field hockey umpires are in great demand and earn a fee for every game they officiate. Imagine working all weekend alphabetizing DVD's at the local video store. Now imagine getting paid to run around outside for a couple of hours on a sunny afternoon. Guess what? You'll earn more officiating two field hockey games in one afternoon than you will working all weekend at minimum wage!
Are the Olympics in your future? Remember, not every one that represents their country in the Olympics goes as an athlete -- we need umpires at the Olympics, the Junior World Cup, the Pan Am Games, the World Cup, and many other international events. If you're an athlete and can keep up with the best players on the planet, perhaps you'll represent your country in the Olympics as a field hockey official!
In the United States, field hockey umpires are organized into chapters. Each chapter serves a local collective of teams. Each chapter has its own training program that will help prepare you for officiating. College students can be trained by a chapter near their home town and 'transfer' into a chapter near the college that they are attending.
The Shore Chapter (Monmouth County, NJ) is offering a summer course in the evenings in Manasquan, NJ. The course is taught from 7:00PM to 9:00PM, August 14th - August 17th. Practice officiating at a local high school is held in the weeks following completion of the course.
The course fee is $80 and includes materials and equipment.
The trainer for the Shore Chapter is Marilyn Jacobson (mjjmnsq@optonline.net) and is ready to sign people up for the course.
