Learn a new skill and earn $50 per hour umpiring field hockey.

Registration is now open for the evening summer course offered by Mercer County Community College and taught by Cris Maloney, editor of USA Field Hockey's "Ask the Umpire" feature, author of the book, "Field Hockey: Understanding the Game", and publisher of UmpireHockey.com.

Maloney, a former high-level player and certified umpire coach, said that, "The best new umpires can be college or high school students and recent graduates with reliable transportation. Anyone with recent playing experience is hard to beat. Of course, older individuals who are fit, fast and willing to learn modern officiating can step in and really help kids play to the best of their abilities. Folks without strong field hockey backgrounds can contribute at the sub-varsity and middle school level." Maloney continued, "There's something for everyone as umpires are needed at every level -- middle school, high school, club and college."

Maloney's students have ranged in age from pre-teens to retirees. They've officiated at middle schools and high schools and gone on to umpire the game at the college level as well as the National Futures Championships, National Hockey Festival, California Cup, and the USA Junior Olympics.

The course, which is also appropriate as a refresher for experienced umpires needing some up-to-date training, will take place July 9-12, 6:00-8:30p. The tuition is $40. Materials cost approximately $30. USA Field Hockey umpire membership is $85.

To register call MCCC at 609-570-3311.
