Products & Gear The first edition of How To Umpire Hockey, by Cristopher Maloney, publisher of UmpireHockey.com, was first published in 2001 and is updated each year.
When asked why he wrote his book Maloney responded, "To advance the game---to help new and experienced umpires alike understand what’s important and what's not." "Some umpires 'over engineer' relatively minor issues," says Maloney. "I mean, do we really need to carry around an electron microscope to be certain the ball isn't rolling before a free hit is taken? As long as the motion is not significantly changing the relative position of a little ball on a 100x60 yard competition surface, it does NOT matter if the ball is still rolling when the restart is taken. We've just given the team the ball because they were fouled...should we really take the ball away from them because they didn't glue the ball to the surface and wait for the glue to dry? We WANT to penalize the team that committed the foul, certainly not the team that is just trying to get the game restarted!" "An umpire who is too picky about that sort of thing proves that he or she knows the rule AND that he or she doesn't understand the game," says Maloney. It is that kind of frank talk that has helped make How To Umpire Field Hockey so well received by people who are serious about learning how to be better umpires and umpire instructors.
