Here are some examples of legal and illegal actions by attackers and defenders when the self pass is used to restart play.

UPDATE: This rule has changed at all levels since the time that this video was made. The restarter, if he/she decides to dribble the ball instead of passing to a teammate, no longer needs to start with two actions (no separation is needed). Further, an immediate lift is also an option as the first action.
